Lizard Island is unique. It Australia’s northern most island resort, located right on the Great Barrier Reef with 24 powdery white beaches. You can snorkel from a secluded beach to find 120 year old clams up to a metre long… or dive the famous ‘Cod Hole’ to discover the massive but friendly potato cod come and discover you… take a picnic lunch to your own private beach… or take one of many magnificent walks and perhaps bump into a Monitor, the lizard that gives the island its name. Meals and most activities are included in the tariff and while this island is remote, access is easy.
For the active there’s a gymnasium, night & day tennis court, watersports and a freshwater pool to swim in or laze around. The Pavilion Day Spa offers massages, facials and other body treatments.
Accommodation
There’s a choice of accommodation styles. The Pavilion is perched high above the Coral Sea with a 270 degree panoramic view over Anchor Bay, Osprey Island and Sunset Beach. Totally private, it has an expansive deck with a plunge pool and sun lounges and it’s a short stroll down a private path to another secluded area with a table, chairs, views and sea breezes. Inside there’s total comfort, from the Bollinger and fruit bowl greeting to a laptop computer to high-powered binoculars.
The Sunset Point Villas are set high on the ridge among native bushland with filtered sea views. They are private and offer easy access to a string of secluded beaches. Inside, the design gives understated elegance and outside there’s a private deck with squatter’s chairs and a hammock.
The Anchor Bay Suites are set in a broad arch along Anchor Bay, each with sea views and a pathway to the beach. Elegant and spacious indoors and out, they also have a large verandah. The Anchor Bay Rooms are in a tropical garden with easy access to the bay and beach. Inside they are compact but comfortable and all rooms have a private balcony with hammock.
Dining
The resort’s relaxed lounge is open all day and is stocked with an extensive range of local and imported beers and Australian wines, spirits and liqueurs.
Dine in Osprey’s Restaurant where the menu changes daily (guests are also welcome to request special dishes). It is an intimate setting for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with the open verandah overlooking the beach. Gourmet hampers are available for beach picnics and the chefs can cater for special dietary needs.
Getting There
From Cairns there are two flights daily with Macair (60 minute flight) or Skytrans offers charters.
