Australian Resorts - Orpheus Island Resort North Queensland
No television, no telephone, no disco, no day-trippers and no children under 15. Those are the things you will have to do without on Orpheus Island. The resort is located within the National Park of the Great Barrier Reef. There’s a limit of only 42 guests at any time so space and privacy are assured.
There are many private beaches, three scenic bush walks and 1100 species of fish waiting just the other side of the sand in the coral gardens. The resort facilities include two swimming pools, heated spa, two bars, open-air restaurant, a quiet lounge area, day/night tennis court, gymnasium, recreation room, internet kiosk and water sports centre. Complimentary activities include paddleboards, canoes, light fishing, snorkelling, guided walks, catamarans and motorized dinghies. Charges apply for scuba diving, sunset cruises, game fishing, outer reef trips, seaplane charter and ‘dining with the tides’.
Accommodation
The accommodation is superb - simple, stylish and beautifully appointed… and just a stones throw from the water’s edge. On Orpheus they call it ‘unpretentious comfort’. All 21 rooms are air-conditioned with ceiling fans, mini bar, CD player, King beds (or two singles on request), bathrobe and slippers, aromatherapy oil burner and quality toiletries. The Orpheus Retreat rooms are a studio style with their own private patio and personal spa and the Nautilus Suites are spacious with a huge private patio, separate lounge and bedroom area and personal spa.
Dining
All meals and snacks (including gourmet picnic hampers) are included in the tariff.
Dining is relaxed yet sophisticated and the cuisine is prepared and served with flair and imagination. The meals included are an a la carte breakfast, alfresco lunches in the courtyard or gourmet picnic hamper on a private beach. Dinner is an amazing seven-course degustation menu and tea, coffee and biscuits are available in the quiet lounge at all times. Dining with the Tides, where you are wined and dined at your own table on the pier with magnificent views and sunset cost $25 per person - lifelong memories are rarely this inexpensive!
Getting There
The Orpheus seaplane operates daily from Cairns (1 hour) and twice daily from Mackay (30 minutes).
