The Honeymoon Resorts Of New Caledonia
All the properties we have chosen for romantic breaks to New Caledonia are in the Southern Province (Noumea and the Isle of Pines). Before going into details on the accommodation, there are a couple of misconceptions about holidays in New Caledonia.
One is, that it is expensive. Yes, the cost of living is higher than, say Vanuatu or Fiji, but there are excellent accommodation and airfare packages (7 nights from less than $1000 per person) and it is closer than the other destinations. Dining out, you’ll pay around the same for a meal as you would in a good restaurant in Australia or New Zealand but you have the atmosphere of being on the French Riviera with excellent cuisine without the cost of getting to France. And, for lunch, why not live like the ‘French’ - pick up a breadstick, some cheese and pate from the corner shop!
Secondly, I have heard people say that it is ‘too French’. Not a bit - the local people are friendly, welcoming and are honestly chuffed when you try out your vaguely remembered school French (and most people speak English). For the author’s personal observations, click here.
The resorts we have chosen will suit all tastes and budgets. At the five star end we have Le Meridien Noumea, Le Meridien Ile des Pins and Coral Palms Island Resort (the closest five star overwater bungalows this side of Bora Bora).
Just down from Le Meridien Noumea, in Anse Vata, are three properties that share a huge, central swimming pool: The Park Hotel (4 Star), the Nouvata Hotel (mid-range) and Le Pacifique (great value, facilities and location for those on a budget).
Also in Noumea, on the point between Anse Vata and the Baie des Citrons, is the Novotel Surf and nearby, the Casa del Sole for those who like self-contained serviced apartments.
A few minutes drive from the city center of Noumea, Kuendu Beach Resort is located on the beach of Kuendu in Nouville. We have chosen this one for its six overwater bungalows. There is also a lovely little overwater chapel for couples who may want to renew their vows or have a devotion ceremony (marriages here are not legally recognised in Australia or New Zealand).
